Angamaly Diaries (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

The Angamaly that filmmaker  Lijo Jose Pellissery and writer Vinod Jose scribble their diary notes on is a dusty, deafening town that smells of pork and sloshed human blood. The ceaseless squabbles for honour, money and might render it a land with almost dystopian proportions, where a terrifyingly realistic tale of subsistence unfurls.

Angamaly Diaries VeeyenThe Angamaly that filmmaker  Lijo Jose Pellissery and writer Vinod Jose scribble their diary notes on is a dusty, deafening town that smells of pork and sloshed human blood. The ceaseless squabbles for honour, money and might render it a land with almost dystopian proportions, where a terrifyingly realistic tale of subsistence unfurls.

The Palliyangadi team of Angamaly is headed by Vincent Pepe (Antony Varghese), a graduation dropout twenty something guy, who dreams of moving abroad with his girl friend, and settling down in Germany. Together with his team mates Bheeman (Vineeth Vishwam), Pork Varkey (Githin), Kanakuna Marty (Ananthu) and Parippu Marty (Sreekanth Dasan), Pepe gets embroiled in a crime atroce, and in no time finds himself in a quandary where the future looks uncertain and frightfully bleak. Veeram (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

On a peripheral level, ‘Veeram’ is a highly gratifying thrill ride through the feud ridden terrains of North Malabar, where machismo rules the roost and blood seems cheaper than water. Dig deeper into it, and you have an intelligent amalgamation of two markedly diverse cultures and two startlingly similar, celebrated tales from them with hitherto unforeseen overlappings.

It is no ordinary canvas that Jayaraj has mounted his epic film ‘Veeram’ on, and as such it evolves into an ambitious demonstration of an idea that amazingly blends two classic tales together. Atypical in conception and phenomenal in implementation, ‘Veeram’ presents you with one of the most memorable cinematographic experiences that you have witnessed ever in contemporary Malayalam cinema. Aby (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

‘Aby’ is a film that does display tremendous visual craft, and the style is inarguably there. However, beneath all that panache, is a lumbering tale that runs a time-honored route with its wheels falling off along the way.

Aby Malayalam Movie reviewOne gets to see a meadow full of blue spring blooms, as the curtains are raised in Srikant Murali’s ‘Aby’, and a boy runs across it, finally driving a dragonfly, perched on a small flower, onto a flight. As the tiny insect takes to the air, the boy looks at it wonder eyed, spreading his arms sideways and fluttering them as if they were wings. Ezra (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

The urban unease that is unleashed in ‘Ezra’ is one that lurks around dark corners, and as the couple frantically tries to tide over the terror that has taken over their lives, they realize that fear finally has a meaning. Eerie and unsettling by turns, ‘Ezra’ is a chilling feature that is deftly directed, splendidly acted and elegantly shot.

Ezra Review VeeyenWhat makes ‘Ezra’ decidedly dissimilar to the horror flicks in Malayalam is that the fear in it for once, is no silly business. An exorcism drama that dwells on a much recognizable theme and quite identifiable plot devices, Jay K’s ‘Ezra’ nonetheless emerges the most intensely shot horror film in Malayalam till date. That Freak Voice in ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’!

Oru Mexicam AparathaOf late, my interest in films on campus politics has waned, precisely because of all the inflated glorification that one gets to see in them. Exceptions are always welcome, though the trailer of ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’ directed by Tom Immatti, looks like it has the red flag royally flying all over it. But then with a title as that, what else does one expect? Continue reading “That Freak Voice in ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’!”

Will Jayaraj’s ‘Veeram’ live up to all the hype?

Veeram JayarajJayaraj’s ‘Veeram’ is one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of 2017, and the director it seems has left no stone unturned to see to it that the film is a visual extravaganza. Having roped in some of the best technicians from all over the world, Jayaraj’s film has been reportedly shot on a budget of 35 crores!
