A story that could have struck gold a couple of decades back, Mammootty in a role that does justice neither to him nor to the hundreds of thousands of his admirers all over the world and slipshod film making that is all over the place – Ramesh Pisharody’s ‘Gana Gandharvan’ is best summed up in these three terse statements.
The question that ‘Evide’ harbours in its title is answered in no time by its sheer obviousness. And for a mystery thriller as this, it could prove fatal, and expectedly leads to its crack-up in no time.
‘Thottappan’ is a bittersweet film that appeals to you on several levels and yet leaves you wanting for more. The performances are outstanding and there are several moments that you would carry back home with you, but you would also wish that it had not stuck to the template that you have by now, grown so familiar with.
‘An International Local Story’ is a sparsely funny attempt that will not have connoisseurs of comedies laughing their hearts away in merriment. Notwithstanding the efforts of its director, it hardly has anything on offer except a harmless chuckle or two that you might encounter on the way.
‘Irupathiyonnam Noottandu’ has a contemporariness that is regrettably restricted to its title. Beyond that, it’s a hollow show that cinematically falls way behind its times.
‘My Story’ snuggles into its formulaic mould with ease, and settles down for a very conventional finale, after a couple of hours of romantic non-happenings. Sappy and corny by turns, its only claim to fame would be that it features two of the best actors in showbiz who despite all its daftness, give it their very best shot.
‘Vishwa Vikhyatharaya Payyanmar’ is a dismayingly frivolous affair that should disappear into oblivion much faster than it probably thought it would. Quickly running out of charms, it’s a disposable cinematic experience that is peeled and tossed away, the moment you walk out of the theatres.
‘Crossroad’ is a loosely screwed in ensemble, pieces of which keep falling off every time it tries to punch in a point. It’s unlikely to be remembered as a benchmark in portmanteau films, and leads you into the hum-ho zone in no time. Strike off those last three shorts, and you might literally find yourself stranded on the crossroads with this one.
