Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much awaited directorial debut ‘Lucifer’ is more than anything else, a blatant celebration of the star actor that Mohanlal is, and in laying out a feast that caters to the colossal stardom of its leading star, everything else, including inventiveness takes a back seat.
Looking back, ‘Kammara Sambhavam’ strikes you as a strange case of having a bit too much and yet having never even nearly enough. Teeming with characters, ornately mounted and extensively shot, it’s the sort of film that could have been an epic, but ends up anything but a legend instead.
Kamal’s ‘Aami’ falls short of the requisites of an elegant biopic by a mile, and plays along like an unimaginatively scripted radio show, never really drawing you in, and never really letting you leave either. There is little of that captivating life that had enamored us here, or even less of the angst and authenticity of the woman who had chosen to live and love on her own inimitable terms.
A primitive allure that had been long lost makes a revisit through ‘Kaattu’, and it’s a peculiar combo of the dismal and the lyrical that Arun Kumar Aravind comes up with in his new film. It’s a complex character drama that is tonally and visually notable; a foreboding and dark tale that makes for austere viewing and told with an uncanny grace.
At the end of an extremely long narration, vice is vanquished and righteousness triumphs. And you look back at it and what you see is an overly self indulgent film that never really knew where to knock it off, and which has instead evolved into an easily foreseeable experience that is obsessed with its own importance.
