Geethu’s refusal to stick to stereotypes and her affecting reading of a love tale that tears up the social tapestry earn for ‘Moothon’ a distinctive place amidst the sparsely lit up landscape of queer cinema in the country. The howls and catcalls and the loud sniggers and the off-colour jokes in the cinema halls notwithstanding, it’s a cinematic composition that needs to be appreciated for its compassionate and unapologetically adult take on human sexuality.
Appearing laboured and disconnected, and carrying very little intrigue, ‘Love Action Drama’ is a perfect example of what could be termed as fluff entertainment. There is barely a silent moment in this almost two and a half hour long sight and sound blast, and all you keep wishing for amidst all the cacophony is that it had a sound story to tell as well.
The macho rhythm that Adeni attempts to work up with ‘Mikhael’ is the kind that could be passable at the moment, but forgettable soon after. Which is why despite all its attempts to be a swanky action flick, it strikes you as a charade more than anything else.
Roshan Andrews appears out of his depth in ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’, and the film appears more like a misspent opportunity than the highly agreeable jaunt that it should have been. Mounted on an epic scale, this is a film where the gargantuan efforts are all conspicuous, but the results quite regrettably, patchy and uneven.
It’s a fascinating subject without doubt, but one that is lost in an assorted downpour of musty jokes and sentimentalities. At best, ‘Hey Jude’ makes you yearn for the film maker who had gifted you with a gem as ‘Artist’ not long back, and fervently wish he would demonstrate to us what it means to capably blend the tragic with the terrific, yet again.
‘Sakhavu’ is a talkathon of a movie that could inspire a few with those odd invigorating moments. And then there are people who believe that a piece of cinema should be much more than that, for whom it comes across more like an overly dramatic moral science lesson on communism, than anything else.
