The fine intent notwithstanding, ‘Shubharathri’ does not seem to acknowledge the tremendous transformation that has occurred to cinema in this corner of the world. A bit too aged to make an impression on today’s viewers, it’s a film with a valid message that unquestionably deserved a much finer treatment.
Bilahari’s ‘Allu Ramendran’ is a scaled down ‘Maheshinte Prathikaram’ that talks of how individual enmity and personal vendetta could rule and ruin human lives, when it turns obsessive and fanatical. What it lacks are the emotional nuances and that the fine sensibilities latter film had in abundance.
Malayalam Cinema saw some spectacular performances from its women actors in 2018, and what is surprising is that at least three actors who had made it to the list last year, have ensured a place for themselves on the roll this year as well. Here goes.
‘Dakini’ has none of the inventiveness that its trailer so blatantly suggested the film might have. At best it merely strikes you as a collection of cardboard caricatures that flit around on stage, with plenty of empty talk and emptier circumstances that leave you tremendously worn out at the end of the day.
Heartbreaking, hilarious and hopeful by turns, ‘Sudani from Nigeria’ is a glorious triumph whichever way you look at it, be it the exemplary performances, the proficient scripting or the competent direction. Words would probably do little justice to this gem of a film, that should not, at any cost be missed in the theatres.
