Malayalam Cinema saw some spectacular performances from its women actors in 2018, and what is surprising is that at least three actors who had made it to the list last year, have ensured a place for themselves on the roll this year as well. Here goes.
Malayalam Cinema saw some spectacular performances from its women actors in 2018, and what is surprising is that at least three actors who had made it to the list last year, have ensured a place for themselves on the roll this year as well. Here goes.
Nimisha Sajayan
The year started off with a whopper performance from Nimisha Sajayan in ‘Eeda’, and it almost seemed as if it would be a difficult feat to walk beyond. However, as the year reached the final quarter, she stunned us yet again with a meticulous performance in ‘Oru Kuprasidha Payyan’ that was probably the best thing about the Madhupal film. 2018 proved beyond doubt that Nimisha is here to stay.

Aishwarya Lekshmi
Anyone who has watched ‘Varathan’ on screen would be witness to the kind of astounding performer that Aishwarya Lekshmi is. She does it so fluidly, so effortlessly, and in ‘Varathan’, the looming dread that hangs about in the air, and makes the film one-of-a-kind, is courtesy the hushed quivers that Aishwarya so scrupulously lays out. With less than five films on her filmography, Aishwarya is one of the most bankable actors that we have in Malayalam right now.

Anu Sithara
Anu Sithara followed up her ‘Ramante Eden Thottam’ act of last year, with a bravura performance in ‘Captain’, where she essayed the role of the distressed footballer’s spouse. There is little evidence for the concern over a technique in Anu’s acting, and it is this minimalism and unfussiness that renders her performances radiant. Though there were forgettable appearances in films as ‘Padayottam’ and ‘Oru Kuprasidha Payyan’, Anu proved her mettle, yet again in 2018.

Aparna Gopinath
In a film that probably never managed to find its share of viewers, Aparna Gopinath brought about an exemplariness to her portrayal of a woman who finds herself face to face with a shattering circumstance in life. Often rising above the inconsistencies in the script, Aparna grabs the role in ‘Mazhayathu’ with a vengeance and goes at it with such a resolve that reminds you of the actor’s dazzling act in ‘Munnariyippu’ a few years back.

Savithri Sreedharan & Sarasa Balussery
The two surprising, yet most deserving entrants to the list would of course be Savithri Sreedharan and Sarasa Balussery – the two endearing mothers in ‘Sudani from Nigeria’ – who swept away a million Malayali hearts with their adorable performances in the film. There was no end to the surprises that these women held in store on screen, and if they emerged the true scene stealers of the year, you only have their charismatic acting prowess to put the credits and blame on.
