Perugia, the quaint little Italian town, forms the setting as much for the film (directed by Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn) as it is for the ‘nightmare’ that Amanda Knox, in her own words endured in Italy, being a barely twenty year old young woman, who was convicted and later acquitted on charges of having allegedly murdered her roommate Meredith Ketcher. 1922 (2017) English Movie Short Review
It’s been a couple of years at least since ‘1922’ was released and I came across this gem of a film by sheer chance, and it surprises me that I had read very little about it before hand. Based on Stephen King’s novel by the same name ‘1922’, directed by Zak Hilditch is an eerie study on crime, guilt and eventual redemption. Continue reading “1922 (2017) English Movie Short Review”
Burning (2018) Korean Movie Short Review
There is every reason for you to believe that the Korean film ‘Burning’ might be just another love triangle in the offing, but director Chang-dong Lee dispels the notion in no time. There is no doubt that the narration remains uneven throughout, but the film does carry its own sweet rewards that are eventually revealed to the audience. Continue reading “Burning (2018) Korean Movie Short Review”
Abducted in Plain Sight (2016) English Documentary Short Review
There would be several occasions in the course of watching ‘Abducted in Plain Sight’, when you would pause the play button and contemplate on whether what you are watching is indeed a true event. A few random Google searches later, you return to watch the rest of it, as implausible as the whole idea of it seems. Continue reading “Abducted in Plain Sight (2016) English Documentary Short Review”
Wild Wild Country (2019) English Documentary Short Review
There has hardly been a Netflix series that I had been glued to, from the start to the finish as ‘Wild Wild Country’, and the reasons are many. Always having been one who is damn curious about Osho and his eventful life, this web series is one that kept me hooked throughout, and which I finished off in record time. Continue reading “Wild Wild Country (2019) English Documentary Short Review”
Searching for Sugarman (2012) English Documentary Short Review
It’s been a while since I watched ‘Searching for Sugarman’, on the recommendation of a dear friend, and decided to go for it once again, these lockdown days. Malik Bendjelloul’s documentary on Rodriguez, strikes you more as an investigative cinematic piece into the life of a man about whom very little is known, and boy, the rewards that it holds for you as a viewer, are nothing short of exceptional. Continue reading “Searching for Sugarman (2012) English Documentary Short Review”
The Keepers (2018) English Documentary Short Review
Ryan White’s docu-series on Netflix, ‘The Keepers’ is nothing short of explosive stuff. It follows two determined women, Gemma Hoskins and Abbie Fitzgerald Schaub – former students of a nun named Catherine Cesnik at Baltimore’s Archbishop Keough High School, who strive hard to find out what actually happened on the night of November 7, 1969, when the nun disappeared, only to be found murdered a couple of months later on January 3, 1970, near a garbage dump in the Baltimore suburb of Lansdowne. Aamis (2019) Assamese Movie Short Review
I had heard so much about this Assamese gem and National Award winner, and deliberately chose not to read anything on it until I got to watch it. And I am glad I did. ‘Aamis’ has to be one of those Indian films that starts off typically and after a while treads into a territory that grabs you by your throat and shakes you up all over. Continue reading “Aamis (2019) Assamese Movie Short Review”
Young Adult (2011) English Movie Short Review
Charlize Theron would remain the prime reason behind my deciding to watch this film, and Jason Reitman’s ‘Young Adult’ reiterates why viewers like me look up to the actor with such an indomitable conviction. This is another of those films that Theron chisels up to perfection, and with some brilliant writing by Diablo Cody, ‘Young Adult’ turns out to be an interesting watch. Continue reading “Young Adult (2011) English Movie Short Review”
Fracture (2007) English Movie Short Review
Thirteen years after its release in 2007, Gregory Hoblit’s ‘Fracture’ remains as engaging as it gets. For one, the structure of this fantastic psychological thriller is straightforward, in that there is no suspense regarding who the murderer is. Theodore “Ted” Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) shoots his wife on the face and makes its clear that death is the penalty for infidelity. Continue reading “Fracture (2007) English Movie Short Review”
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) English Movie Short Review
Derek Cianfrance’s ‘The Place beyond the Pines’ stretches across a long timeline, and three discernible, distinct time frames could very easily be identified. It starts off with a motorbike stuntman by the name of Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) who discovers that he is the father of a toddler one fine morning and develops aspirations of starting a family. In a bid to make some quick money, he starts robbing banks and is eventually caught and shot. Continue reading “The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) English Movie Short Review”
