Jungle Joys @ Rolling Stones, Masinagudi!

I have been to quite a few forest resorts in the last few years, and had chosen Rolling Stones as a second choice, when I found that bookings at another resort were way out of my budget. Having been to Rolling Stones, however, I am glad that I rethought my initial decision, since Rolling Stones is every jungle enthusiast’s dream come true destination.

Tucked away from the Masinagudi – Ooty main road, Rolling Stones is a stunning resort that is located right in the midst of the jungle, and though Google Maps had led me right to the spot, I somehow couldn’t find my way in. Connectivity is pretty low at RS, and hence I drove a few meters back to the main road, before I could ring up RS over the telephone. Mahadevan, the resort manager, who picked up the phone was all too helpful and within minutes I had landed back at RS, where my friends and I were warmly greeted by Mr. Ashish Kole, who runs the place.

RS consists of four rooms, all of which are equally good, since its a forest all around, and you never know from which direction an elephant might choose to stride in. I had booked room R1, and this amazing room looks out onto the forest, the stream that flows down it and the hills spreading out in all their grandeur beyond the green thickets. We had been told that RS does not offer jungle safaris, and we could very well understand why, since very soon we were to discover the kind of wildlife that RS invariably lets you be a part of, all from the comfort of your rooms.

We stayed on for two nights at RS, and came across three elephants – on three different occasions, with herds of deer and flocks of peacocks giving us constant company, throughout our stay. We could also catch sight of wild boars and jackals darting about and several monkey clans having a field day. And at night, its wonderful to simply lie on your bed, listening to the quaint sounds of the jungle out there and the crickets having ventured out on a chirping marathon.

The rooms at RS are impeccably neat, and wonderfully maintained. The service, led by Mr. Mahadevan needs to be applauded, and the food served home-cooked and utterly delicious. I would also like to specifically mention Chandran, the room help, who was of great aid to us.

To cut a long story short, RS is totally worth every penny that you spend on it. I’m sure I would be back at this place for more. A truly unforgettable experience indeed!
