‘And the Oscar goes to’ does not rise to the stature of Salim Ahmed’s former films, and while it would be unjust to indulge in a comparison as such, it is also inevitable. While it does suggest that there is nothing more magical than what could be conveyed by the medium of cinema, it delivers the said magic, but only in very brief spurts.
‘Neeyum Njanum’ threads together an exceedingly prolonged strand of events that fails to have an emotional impact on the viewers. Drained of specificity, ‘Neeyum Njanum’ makes use of stock romantic situations and bundles them together as a cluttered whole.
Malayalam Cinema saw some spectacular performances from its women actors in 2018, and what is surprising is that at least three actors who had made it to the list last year, have ensured a place for themselves on the roll this year as well. Here goes.
‘Oru Kuprasidha Payyan’ is undermined by quite a few problems and critically lacks the intrigue that could have made a difference. Its overwhelming generic obviousness makes it a slow sinking ship that tugs down along with it a few genuine, terrific performances as well.
‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’ is neither funny nor edgy and leaves you high and dry at the end of its running time. Undermined by emotional incoherence and comic incompetence, this is an unfocussed film that fails to hit its target by a hundred miles.
‘Aanakkallan’ is a disappointment of colossal proportions that makes you want to reach out to Biju Menon and point out that he needs to take a breather. One long look at the kind of choices that he has made of late, and he should sense that it’s time for him to perhaps take it a bit slow, lest the crowd enthusiasm in his films drops down like a stone tossed from the top of a hill.
This warfare could have been tons more fun had ‘Padayottam’ a tighter story-line to fall back on. As it is, it strikes you as a series of intermittently amusing moments, loosely looped together by a plot fabric that severely lacks a strapping context.
Sethu’s film like many of its predecessors, is one that is obsessed with the charisma of its leading star, that everything else, including the plot and the narrative are tossed into the Kuttanadan backwaters.
Prajesh Sen’s sparkling directorial debut ‘Captain’ shines the spotlight on the life and unfortunate demise of an incredible footballer, who wore unrivalled accomplishments on his sleeve. A glorious tribute to a player who eventually got worn out grappling with personal demons, Sen’s malleable biopic is a perceptive portrayal of the player, and more importantly, the man that V P Sathyan was.
