‘Lalitham Sundaram’ will perhaps not speak so much for the directorial skills of Madhu Warrier, or for the writing skills of Pramod Mohan. And with the script out to pasture, the brilliant cast can sadly do little to make up for all the patchiness on show.
It gets increasingly difficult with every passing year to get the tropes of a supernatural horror flick right. Debutante director Jofin T Chacko, must for sure have known what he was getting himself into, and his film ‘The Priest’ strains to achieve what many of his predecessors had set out to. But Jofin’s ambitious film never really springs to life, and there are quite a few reasons why it doesn’t.
‘Prathi Poovankozhi’ would be remembered for the menacing feat that Roshan Andrews comes up with, and the actor in him scores fare better than the film maker this time around. And with a theme that holds considerable power in its premise, it’s a shame that the film ultimately lives up to none of the promise that has been raised.
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much awaited directorial debut ‘Lucifer’ is more than anything else, a blatant celebration of the star actor that Mohanlal is, and in laying out a feast that caters to the colossal stardom of its leading star, everything else, including inventiveness takes a back seat.
‘Odiyan’ is a film that needs to be analysed for what it was to be, and what it actually turned out to be. It’s a film that lets a captivating folklore wash effortlessly down a drain, its magic mercilessly muddled by the murk and mud around.
Kamal’s ‘Aami’ falls short of the requisites of an elegant biopic by a mile, and plays along like an unimaginatively scripted radio show, never really drawing you in, and never really letting you leave either. There is little of that captivating life that had enamored us here, or even less of the angst and authenticity of the woman who had chosen to live and love on her own inimitable terms.
The A-list when it comes to fantastic performances from women actors in Malayalam in 2017, comprises of five actors, three of whom are fresh faces that hold a lot of promise. Here they are!
Buried deep beneath the idealistic blabber on revenge and redemption is a sluggishly formulaic thriller plot that renders ‘Villain’ a banal film. Meekly proficient and mostly deflecting, it’s a prolonged rattle that isn’t exactly music to one’s ears.
‘Udaharanam Sujatha’ is an agreeable tale, the logic and realism of which, could forever be questioned. And yet this is the kind of genial material with which upbeat and buoyant films as these are made, and dreams – both mine and yours – are spun.
Loaded with sensitivity, humour and wisdom, ‘C/o Saira Banu’ is an evocative take on parental care and personal bonds. And with a terrific cast at his disposal, Antony Sony makes certain that his film sticks with you, long after the show.
Antony Sony’s directorial debut is a gusty walk along the shores of life, as it follows a woman and her son grapple with an unforeseen storm that blows in. ‘C/o Saira Banu’ puts together some real sturdy acting feats from its lead actors and comes across as a competent feature debut, that works as much on emotions as it does on human experience.
