The dramatic pressure is way too grim, and the film grinds on persistently, finally ending up a riveting piece. ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ remains without doubt a commendable endeavour, whichever way you look at it, but it just falls short of entering my top favourite list, because it does take a bit too long to get where it wants to be.

With an end that turns out to be superbly touching and a driving narrative that is consistently engaging, Jean Paul Lal’s film is a winner all the way. A perfect weekend watch for a family on the Christmas vacation, this is a lovely film that has both its heart and soul right in place.

It goes without saying that it’s a miracle that the film makers believed that a theme as this could work wonders in 2019. And it’s even a greater marvel that they got several sensible heads to give a nod to this project that could have probably made a ripple a good fifteen or twenty years back.

Despite all the flamboyant oratory that most of the characters abundantly indulge in, ‘Pathinettam Padi’ offers you an ascendant climb that is draining to the core. And what’s most disappointing is that there is nothing much awaiting you right on top, out there at the end of the strenuous climb.

‘9’ could have done immensely better had it kept its focus on the sci-fi element that is probably one of the most unexplored realms in Malayalam cinema. What ruins it is the psychological drivel that it succumbs to, and the subsequent concoction that emerges that pleases fans of none of the genres.
The ritzy shine that ‘Ranam’ sports is of a make-believe kind, and it starts wearing away if you start scratching at its exterior with your nails. And lying beneath all the pizzazz is a hoary saga of gang fights and rivalry that is as drained out as the urban blight that Detroit has become internationally infamous for.

The estimable artistry of the film maker cannot be missed in ‘Koode’; a film that slices right through your heart with its redolent take on human relationships. Working on a fantastical scenario that plays out with an outstanding charm, this gorgeously shot film is a memorable study on love, solitude, estrangement and above all, homecomings.

‘My Story’ snuggles into its formulaic mould with ease, and settles down for a very conventional finale, after a couple of hours of romantic non-happenings. Sappy and corny by turns, its only claim to fame would be that it features two of the best actors in showbiz who despite all its daftness, give it their very best shot.

An honourable try without doubt, but one which is strangely superficial, ‘Vimaanam’ strives to be exuberant, but turns out to be sluggish instead. A film that has its heart all over the place, this is an airplane that takes a while to take off, and which when it finally does, struggles to smoothly touch ground again.

At the end of an extremely long narration, vice is vanquished and righteousness triumphs. And you look back at it and what you see is an overly self indulgent film that never really knew where to knock it off, and which has instead evolved into an easily foreseeable experience that is obsessed with its own importance.
