Here is the list of 5 film makers in Malayalam who got us super-excited last year, with their cinematic accomplishments. Clearly headed for much bigger things, these film makers are a mixed lot – established craftsmen to novices that hold a bundle of flair within. These aren’t strict rankings of course and neither are these film makers to be viewed in a chronological order of diminishing importance. Rather, this is a comprehensive roll of five directors who shone plenty of their talents around and had us all impressed in 2018.

With ‘Ee.Ma.Yau’ Lijo Jose Pellissery surpasses himself, asserts once and for all that he’s a master craftsman who sees his dough even in a theme that is as stiff and unmalleable as a corpse (pun intended), and astutely crafts a chimerical ode to mortality. Hauling a perfect family portrait off the walls, Lijo smashes it on the floor, leaving us horrified beside a blue, lifeless body that grows colder by the minute, a bunch of riotous, bawling mourners and glimpses of nothing less than what looks like hell opening up above, as streaks of lightning intermittently part the dark skies.

Best of Malayalam Cinema – 2017

The year is about to draw to a close, and it’s that time of the year when you loll on the couch and recount the best cinematic experiences that you have had in the course of the past twelve months that had swiftly flitted by. It has been one eventful year for sure, that saw many an appealing and inventive film, making it to the theatres and readily being applauded and acknowledged as first-rate efforts. What follows is anything but a comprehensive list, and what it endeavors to do instead, is to lay out five films that I deem as movies that are certainly not to be missed, and which make it to my final December chart this year!

Angamaly Diaries (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

The Angamaly that filmmaker  Lijo Jose Pellissery and writer Vinod Jose scribble their diary notes on is a dusty, deafening town that smells of pork and sloshed human blood. The ceaseless squabbles for honour, money and might render it a land with almost dystopian proportions, where a terrifyingly realistic tale of subsistence unfurls.

The Palliyangadi team of Angamaly is headed by Vincent Pepe (Antony Varghese), a graduation dropout twenty something guy, who dreams of moving abroad with his girl friend, and settling down in Germany. Together with his team mates Bheeman (Vineeth Vishwam), Pork Varkey (Githin), Kanakuna Marty (Ananthu) and Parippu Marty (Sreekanth Dasan), Pepe gets embroiled in a crime atroce, and in no time finds himself in a quandary where the future looks uncertain and frightfully bleak. 86 new comers in his new film ‘Angamali Diaries’ is what Lijo Jose Pellissery has in store! I still remember watching his debut film ‘Nayakan’ at the Dhanya Theatre in Trivandrum, and wondering what on earth had actually hit me!
