Jallikkattu (2019) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikkattu’ is a searing reminder of how primal we still remain and how readily the facades of culture and civilization topple down all around us, when the primordial instincts within us, run riot. Uncompromising to the core and often beguiling the viewer, this is a fascinating film set on an astonishing momentum that reaffirms the director’s reputation as a fabulous film maker who ruthlessly shreds up and throws genre conventionalities to the winds.

Best Filmmakers in Malayalam – 2018

Here is the list of 5 film makers in Malayalam who got us super-excited last year, with their cinematic accomplishments. Clearly headed for much bigger things, these film makers are a mixed lot – established craftsmen to novices that hold a bundle of flair within. These aren’t strict rankings of course and neither are these film makers to be viewed in a chronological order of diminishing importance. Rather, this is a comprehensive roll of five directors who shone plenty of their talents around and had us all impressed in 2018.

Ee Ma Yau (2018) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

With ‘Ee.Ma.Yau’ Lijo Jose Pellissery surpasses himself, asserts once and for all that he’s a master craftsman who sees his dough even in a theme that is as stiff and unmalleable as a corpse (pun intended), and astutely crafts a chimerical ode to mortality. Hauling a perfect family portrait off the walls, Lijo smashes it on the floor, leaving us horrified beside a blue, lifeless body that grows colder by the minute, a bunch of riotous, bawling mourners and glimpses of nothing less than what looks like hell opening up above, as streaks of lightning intermittently part the dark skies.

Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil (2018) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

Tinu Pappachan in ‘Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil’ seeks to craft an ultimate jailbreak film, and constructs a sweaty, scorching hell of a prison at Kottayam for the purpose. He then gets his inmates ready for the final getaway on a midnight express, and takes us along on their trail to escape, that has its fair share of moments and a few non-moments.

Mayanadhi (2017) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

In ‘Mayanadhi, director Aashiq Abu, armed with a dexterously penned screenplay, settles down to sensitively sketch a doomed tale of love. An impeccable reconstruction of an age-old narrative in an untested realistic setting, ‘Mayanadhi’ is the kind of film that holds a depth of meanings in those abstract gazes, a profundity of emotions in those unuttered words, and which leaves an inexplicable, seething sting at the upshot of it all.

Angamaly Diaries (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

The Angamaly that filmmaker  Lijo Jose Pellissery and writer Vinod Jose scribble their diary notes on is a dusty, deafening town that smells of pork and sloshed human blood. The ceaseless squabbles for honour, money and might render it a land with almost dystopian proportions, where a terrifyingly realistic tale of subsistence unfurls.

Angamaly Diaries VeeyenThe Angamaly that filmmaker  Lijo Jose Pellissery and writer Vinod Jose scribble their diary notes on is a dusty, deafening town that smells of pork and sloshed human blood. The ceaseless squabbles for honour, money and might render it a land with almost dystopian proportions, where a terrifyingly realistic tale of subsistence unfurls.

The Palliyangadi team of Angamaly is headed by Vincent Pepe (Antony Varghese), a graduation dropout twenty something guy, who dreams of moving abroad with his girl friend, and settling down in Germany. Together with his team mates Bheeman (Vineeth Vishwam), Pork Varkey (Githin), Kanakuna Marty (Ananthu) and Parippu Marty (Sreekanth Dasan), Pepe gets embroiled in a crime atroce, and in no time finds himself in a quandary where the future looks uncertain and frightfully bleak. 86? You gotta be kidding me!

86 new comers in his new film ‘Angamali Diaries’ is what Lijo Jose Pellissery has in store!
